Castle Sinclair Girnigoe is located about 3 miles north of Wick on the east coast of Caithness, Scotland. It is considered to be one of the earliest seats of Clan Sinclair. It comprises the ruins of two castles: the 15th-century Castle Girnigoe; and the early 17th-century Castle Sinclair. They are designated as a scheduled monument. [1]

Castle Sinclair Girnigoe is a ruined castle in Caithness that is listed by the World Monuments Fund. It is located 3 miles north of Wick where it overlooks the dramatic cliff faces that face Sinclair Bay. The castle is managed by The Clan Sinclair Trust and admission is free.

The castle is separated from the mainland by an arm of the sea known as goe, a norse word meaning cave. There is a dry moat on one side which allows for a drawbridge, and added protection for the castle from mainland attacks. Sinclair Girnigoe Castle GPS coordinates, 58°28'33.0"N 3°03'29.0"W, were extremely helpful when making our way there.

The imposing ruins of this once-mighty castle cling to the rocky cliffs of Caithness, at the southeastern end of Sinclair Bay, near Noss Head. Much of the castle's history is shrouded in mystery, but our best guess is that it was begun in the late 14th century by the Sinclair's, Earls of Orkney and later to become Earls of Caithness.
